The history of the ideology of Hungarian Neolog Judaism, and of the Judaic scholarship related to it

Principal investigator: Tamás Turán

Research questions and objectives:

The emphasis on the academic study of Judaism (Wissenschaft des Judentums) was one of the core ideological elements of the moderate reform Jewish stream in Hungary called Neolog Judaism, along with its notions of religious progress, culture, and patriotism. I have published numerous specific studies on the ideological and scholarly profile of this - still prominent - religious movement in Hungary (see, e.g., 150th Anniversary of the Hungarian Jewish Congress, ed. T. Turán, Special Issue of Jewish Culture and History 21/3 [2020]). Within this broader project, my current aim is to produce a comprehensive history of the ideology of Neolog Judaism, presenting the spectrum and historical development of its views on theology, politics, education and culture.
