Due to the absence of prior works, the research project’s first step is to list the sources and categorise them by period and type. To this end, primary research and data collection began in 2002 and are still in progress – based on material in Hungarian and foreign libraries (Oxford, New York, Jerusalem). Once the Hungarian Yiddish corpus has been reconstructed, it must then be analysed according to various criteria. In this way it will be integrated into Hungarian Jewish history and – more generally – into Yiddish cultural and linguistic history. Study of the sources will cast new light on the identity of Hungary’s Jews, on changes in their identity and on their linguistic assimilation.
